Hi everyone ...

Have you visited StumbleUpon yet?  You might want to very soon because ......

It was announced last week that "StumbleUpon" is the number one social network for referring traffic to our websites!
Now that's a good reason to want to know more about it and why it's the topic of this week's mailing!

StumbleUpon is based upon a very simple platform.
You choose what your personal interests are and then multiple websites are delivered to you (only when in "active mode" on the site) for "discovering" new sources of info. Active mode is initiated by clicking on the "Stumble!" button which you can find on the site and/or by downloading a toolbar that sits under your address bar on your browser.

Along the way you can rate each site with a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down sign. As sites are continually rated with a "thumbs-up," the page is delivered to more and more StumbleUpon users.

StumbleUpon also allows you to “add” new sites. In your regular time on the internet you might find a site (like your own) that you think would interest other people. Just give it a "thumbs up" from your toolbar and it will be submitted to the SU database. If the site is "new" to the database you will see this window:

Fill out the form. Personalize with a title and a brief description of the page. You can then categorize this into any one of the categories listed and you can tag it with whatever appropriate tags would benefit visitors. Once the site is in the system, people will begin stumbling and learning more about the site you submitted.

How easy is this?
Pretty cool, I'd say.  Here are some ways to maximize it for "your business" success.

Personalize Your Member/Profile Page

Upload a picture, tell people who you are (fill out the “General” section), and share with the community what you like (the “Interests” section). If people are browsing the user community, they’ll get a truer sense of who you are.

Join Communities Relating To Your Business Interests

Join targeted communities so that the traffic delivered to you  is what you want. As mentioned above, you’ll also be able to contribute similar pages to the StumbleUpon engine so that they are added. If your page relates to these groups, they will be served to the group members. You can join up to 63 groups listed under numerous major categories.
Befriend Other SU People Who Have Similar Interests

Adding friends whose pages interest you means that they will likely appreciate the pages that you’re submitting as well. It grows into a mutual relationship. With the StumbleUpon network, you can have up to 200 friends ... nice element as no overwhelm.  Who likes that?

Stumble Often!

Just submitting and stumbling upon a single page doesn’t bode well for your reputation, and active users will take notice of this. Stumble frequently. If people like the pages you’ve stumbled upon or submitted, you’ll be rated high in the community.  Just saying ... :-)

Label & Tag Your Submitted Pages Appropriately

When you tag your new submissions, be relevant. Pertinent tags will bring you the most targeted traffic from the users who specifically have expressed an interest in the topic you are providing content for. If you include lots of keywords (and tags) that don’t relate to your site, your popularity (if any) will be short lived as the thumbs-down button gets pressed. Keep in mind that once the page is submitted, tags can be added and removed by the "stumbling " members (which is an quality indication that they’re visiting the site!)

My Personal Recommendation:
Go to the site and try it out. It takes clicking a few buttons to find your way around comfortable, but worth the discovery time.  You should also know that unlike other social networks where you can go and simply add a posting and spend very little time .....StumbleUpon should be accessed when you have some time to explore and look at new sites and of course add your own suggestions.
And, bottom line  ...

If you want "your" website to be discovered and seen by more people, using StumbleUpon will get that mission accomplished, "if" you make a fair contribution back!
