2.

A 4th of July "weekly special" you will not want to miss.  Those of you working this weekend ~take advantage!

What a week for Google! Google has been in the news everyday this week with a whirlwind of announcements.  Click on the links to find out more about each one!

 Previously - Social Search

This mailing is a simple overview of Google+ ~ which if you have not heard is a new social network designed to compete with facebook.

Before diving in I already hear some of you crying ..."not another social network!" BUT .... this is when you have to stop and ask yourself "why" are you using social networks?  If you are just on them to be on them, then you might have reason to cry. If you have a purpose for your use of a social network, then you should be excited to see what new possibilities will be available to support your communications. If this last statement leaves you hanging, definitely check out this week's weekly special,
NOW!

On to Google+ ... so far it has only been made available to the social networking elite. BUT there are lots of articles on what it includes and some of the features are quite interesting. Below are some of the highlights ....again, it's up to you to know if they will work for your communications or not.  Maybe they will and maybe they won't!

The core of Google+ will be very familiar to you. It is a main stream (feed) for sharing postings, pictures, links, etc. What's new are the components discussed below with each having its own icon.

Circles is the 1st interesting component.

Circles lets you drag and drop your  friends, family, classmates, co-workers and other into separate custom groups. Users can drag groups of friends in and out of these circles.

This is interesting to me as some of my friends do the same work as myself and I do not always want them to see my secrets. :-)  Would be nice to separate some of the target business groups ...like the old email lists we used to make!  Actually the same thing for friends.  Do you see a way it would work for you?

Circles also delivers more child-like fun to our online time. A puff of smoke and a -1 animation appears when you remove a friend, and when you remove a social circle, it rolls away off the screen.  A bit of fun!

Hangouts is another unique section using video chat!

Google did a lot of research on why chat groups aren't used more on social networks. They came up with some interesting findings and "Hangouts" sounds like a fun solution to me. See what you think.

Instead of directly asking a friend to join a group chat, users instead click “start a hangout” and they’re instantly in a video chat room alone. At the same time, a message goes out to their social circles, letting them know that their friend is “hanging out.” The result, Google has found that friends quickly join. They relate it to walking by someone's front porch where there is a group of friends hanging out vs having to knock on someone's door to let you in to socialize.  Interesting!

Google changes the chat screen to whoever is currently talking. It quickly switches from video feed to video feed, moving faster in bigger groups. The maximum members in any video Hangout is 10, though users can get on a waitlist and wait for someone to leave
Sparks gives us access to lots of "back-up" material. Hmmm...

Sparks, is a collection of articles, videos, photos and other content grouped by interest. For example, the “Movies” spark will have a listing of recent and relevant content for that topic.

The system is algorithmic — it relies on information from other Google products (e.g. Google Search) as well as what is being shared via Google+ and through +1 buttons. Is this going to make it all be overwhelm??  Guess we'll find out!

Photos .. keeping it real??

The photo tab takes a user to all of the photos he or she has shared, as well as the ones he or she is tagged in. It’s not just photo tagging, though: Google+ includes an image editor (complete with Instagram-like photo effects), privacy options and sharing features.

Those of you who use tagging, etc... tell us what you think about this. Visit my blog .. click here.

So what are your initial thoughts?

There will be mobile apps, of course, and maybe more. Google plans to release it in stages and swear they have learned from their mistakes with BUZZ ( their first attempt to offer a social network via Gmail).

All and all .. at this point .... guess we all need to keep our eyes on Google+. Most importantly, do you see a unique way that it could help support your business communications?  Will it have a purpose for you? If you are not sure how to know that, please take advantage of this week's 4th of July special.  It should be be helpful to you.
